PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
The start of a new year is a time for goal-setting and planning ahead. This year marks the beginning of a new decade, one in which the recycling industry is sure to play a major role, and CARI along with it. Our goals remain unchanged: to promote the interests of the recycling industry, and to improve the economic position of our members. We plan to achieve these goals by improving and expanding our programs and services in 2011.
This month, CARI and Endura Energy launched a new solar panel program for members in Ontario. Later this spring, the mapping project CARI undertook with National Resources Canada will take concrete form on our website. This tool will provide a searchable, graphic industry directory, and will help us promote the industry to government and the general public. In the year to come, CARI's Human Resources Manual will be revised and updated, and the Safety Manual will be expanded with input from ISRI. And all the while we will continue our lobbying efforts to improve the railways and to combat metal theft.
While we take this time to look ahead at new opportunities, we should not overlook our existing assets. Many members are already taking advantage of one or more of CARI's cost-saving services. Last year 8 members took part in the NASCO-OP. CARI members can join this purchasing co-operative for free, and benefit from saving on many of the equipment and supplies used in daily operations. Participation in the CARI Group Health Benefits Plan with Agro doubled to 18 members last year. Through this plan, CARI members are given lower-cost group rates with plans tailored to suit their specific needs. Just over 26% of eligible members now belong to the CARI Group Property and Casualty Insurance Program with Cowan. This business insurance and risk management program can also be customized to suit the specific needs of members.
Another popular cost-saving service is the Petro-Canada SuperPass. In addition to the 2.4 cents/litre discount, it now provides CARI members with more fuel savings:
- 5 cents/litre at the pump on 200 litres of fuel by redeeming 15,000 Petro-Points with a "Fuel Savings Reward" card
- 5 cents/litre at the pump when they purchase 2 "SuperWorks" or 2 "The Works" car washes
- 20% more PetroPoints with every purchase for CAA members
Membership in CARI is an investment in your business; the more you take advantage of the resources and cost-saving services CARI provides, the greater your return on investment.
In addition to these programs and services, CARI will have more terrific events in 2011. We are currently planning the 70th Annual CARI Convention set for June 23–25 in Whistler, B.C. The convention's program is being finalized now, so expect more details in the weeks ahead.
Let's look forward to a new year together!
