FAST FACTS
- Those who currently hold AQSIQ licenses must renew between July 1 and September 30. The process has been simplified somewhat and the official rules, can be found at: AQSIQ Notice 98-2009 and AQSIQ Notice 119-2008. When all information has been gathered and a copy of the renewal application has been obtained, everything needs to be translated and an electronic application completed. Shortly there after all supporting documents must be submitted in hardcopies to AQSIQ. It should be noted that all renewal applications must be submitted at least 90 days prior to expiration and further that any new applicants will require either ISO certification or ISRI's RIOS certification.
- Although the U.S. EPA is discussing alternatives to divert auto shredder fluff to recycling and fuel uses from landfills, regulatory hurdles have remained unchanged. One reason that the status quo persists is that EPA's current rulemakings involves the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act. In addition, fluff contains polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), which were blacklisted by Congress in 1970s. The material is potentially suitable for burning in cement kilns or steel mill blast furnaces, while car manufacturers might recycle it into battery trays. ISRI support the idea to use fluff as a secondary raw material rather than burned. ISRI also hoped that the current rulemakings would redefine some substances as scrap rather than waste.
