PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
As we begin 2009, I would like to wish everyone a healthy and prosperous New Year.
It is indeed unfortunate that our industry, like so many others, is facing such turbulent times. We anticipate continued challenges through 2009, largely due to the recent economic turmoil. But, we have been through these difficulties before. The real question is how we operate our businesses effectively during both adversity and prosperity.
There are many strategies that members can employ to manage in uncertain times. They include analysis of financial, operational, inventory and resource requirements. However, there is one investment that you have already made that is often overlooked, your membership in CARI.
Indeed, your membership is an important investment. CARI allows for direct access to many available resources. These include a group Health Benefit and a Property and Casualty program specifically for the scrap sector. Additionally, membership to CARI permits you to enrol, at no cost, to the NASCO-OP, North America's exclusive purchasing cooperative for the recycling industry. Utilizing volume buying, NASCO-OP members benefit from the savings on much of the equipment and supplies used in daily operations. CARI also has a SuperPass program with Petro-Canada, allowing for discounted pricing on fuel, further reducing overhead costs. Just last year CARI started an energy program for electricity and natural gas needs to assist in the reduction of energy costs for our members.
Finally, our CARI sponsored golf tournaments and consumers’ night along with our Annual Convention in June, offers substantial cost savings to all companies, even our large consumer members. These events give members the opportunity to meet and network with many others in our sector.
I encourage every member to investigate enrolment in these cost savings programs and events, as a useful management strategy. Working together with our members, CARI is working to overcome the challenges facing our industry today. We strive for the continued success of our membership.
Sheldon Jarcaig
CARI President

FAST FACTS
- China will reinstate a 17 percent value-added tax on domestic recycled materials, including scrap metals. The Ministry of Finance said the added partial rebates are still in effect until 2010. However, China’s Nonferrous Metal Industry Association (CNIA) has urged the government to cancel the 17 percent value-added tax on scrap imports. The government has not yet made a decision. CNIA has also advised the government to lift restrictions on the tolling trade for scrap copper.

- Electronic Recyclers International (ERI) launched its new e-waste shredder. The shredding system can process a wide range of e-waste including TVs, monitors and computers. The material is slowly shredded for safety reasons and then the different commodities are separated from the shredder stream. Weighing in at over 120,000 pounds and with a gaping jaw of 42 square feet, the shredder can process over 20,000 pounds of e-waste per hour.
- Base on the work initiated by CARI BC Chapter, ISRI recently launched a standalone Web site for stolen property alerts – www.scraptheftalert.com. This service is available to all members and non-members. The revised system identifies the zip codes of incidents and system users, matching them on the basis of a 250-mile radius. It also informs authorized law enforcement officials and a few others post alerts. Victims can contact ISRI directly for alerts on their stolen property. All entries must include the name and phone number of a police contact. CARI is examining the possibility of expanding this service in some manner to cover Canada as well.
