CARI CONVENTION REPORT

Some 230 delegates attended the Canadian Association of Recycling Industries’ (CARI’s) 67th annual convention in the scenic La Malbaie, Charlevoix region of Quebec from June 20 to 22. During the Annual General Meeting delegates elected the new smaller 12 person board of directors and heard that CARI had enjoyed a strong 2007, both financially and with a greater than 17% growth in membership.

The University of Toronto Professor, David Foot made a captivating presentation on the impacts of population growth and the demographic shift in different countries. Dale Orr from Global Insight started off the “Running Your Business” forum by offering his forecast on the Canadian economy. Christopher Nicholson from Jameson International provided a brief background on foreign exchange and some of the strategies for managing one’s foreign exchange portfolio. Jonathan Eckler from Datasoft Group highlighted elements of hedging through the use of a computerized system. At the consumer panel Rob Thomson from Gerdau Ameristeel and John Harris from ArcelorMittal discussed the direction the steel industry is heading and their respective expectations for the coming years.

At the closing banquet, President Sheldon Jarcaig announced his goals for the coming years – continuing the expansion of CARI into other sectors as well as internationally to other continents; strengthening alliance with ISRI and BIR; and changing the industry’s image, especially in regards to metal theft.

The night was concluded with the electrifying performance by Waylon Thibodeau, “Louisiana’s Rockin Fiddler” a New Orleans band. Members are reminded to mark their calendars now for the 68th convention that will be held at the Taboo resort, the home golf course of Mike Weir, in Gravenhurst, Ontario next June 25 to 27.

FAST FACTS

  • Recycling Council of Ontario launched the “Take Back the Light”, the new fluorescent lamps recycling program for the industrial, commercial and institutional sector. This program will divert the mercury-contained fluorescent lamps away from landfills. For more information visit: http://www.takebackthelight.ca/.

  • California legislators and recyclers have reached an agreement on a bill ( http://tinyurl.com/4q2afj) requiring sellers of nonferrous metal be identifiable to police. The revised bill requires a thumbprint and the postponement of cash payments to peddlers for three days excluding payments by mail. Taxpaying businesses and frequent peddlers will be exempted from some of the requirements of the bill. If the yard comes under an investigation, the yard will need to provide a weekly log of purchases to the local police; otherwise, it will be a monthly log along with photograph or video of the metal. ISRI’s West Coast chapter continues to oppose the part of the bill allowing for further municipal or county ordinance.

  • London Metal Exchange postponed the launch of the steel billet futures contract for North and South America. “What we don't want to do is go off with a half measure” said the CEO, Martin Abbot. No other details of the timeframe for the launch were discussed.

  • Rhode Island General Assembly passed Bill SB 2631A, which expands on the producer- responsibility system from the recovery desktop and notebook computers to televisions and computer monitors. In addition, the Assembly has also passed the Bill SB 2455, which ban all specified electronic devices from landfill and incinerator. Both bills have been sent to Governor Donald L. Carcieri for enactment.

  • Chairman and CEO of U.S. Steel Corp., John P. Surma Jr. at the Steel Success Strategies XXIII conference, New York spoke to the accident and injury rates in the steel and steel-related industries. He believed that profits can be enhanced when employees work in a safer manner. In addition, Surma encouraged industry leaders to aim for zero death and injury as everyone acts responsibly. In his speech, he also addressed the need of the global steel industry to reduce its carbon footprint and to develop sustainable raw material supplies. Visit www.agroinsuranceinc-crhb.ca for info.
  • Jonathan Dicker, 25, a metallurgy graduate working at OneSteel Ltd., Sydney, Australia, received the 9th Willy Korf Award for Young Excellence during the Steel Success Strategies XXIII conference co-sponsored by AMM and World Steel Dynamics Inc. While working towards his master’s degree in engineering at the University of New South Wales (UNSW), Jonathan helped with the research of using waste plastics to optimize electric-arc furnace in steelmaking. The process uses granules from cut plastic shopping bags, drink bottles and milk jugs, which replaces injected carbon by 30 percent, lowers carbon dioxide emissions and lowers energy consumption.

  • 17 years old student from Waterloo Collegiate Institute, Daniel Burd discovered a way to break down plastic bags, winning him the top prize at the Canada-Wide Science Fair in Ottawa. The process isolates two bacteria – Sphingomonas and Pseudomonas and combines them with sodium acetate before incubation at 37 C. After mixing it with the polyethylene, the plastic would degrade in about three months.
