CARI MEMBER

CARI member Global Electric Electronic Processing Inc. ("GEEP") has announced the formation of a new partnership and processing facility plant for the recovery of electric and electronic devices as well as ferrous and non-ferrous metals with Fortech. As a result, Geep Costa Rica SRL will now service Central America and the Caribbean region. This region will benefit from the Technology Change Management (TCM) which track assets down to the serial number and guarantees all personal data has been sanitized appropriately.

ArcelorMittal continues their strategy – securing upstream self-sufficiency with the acquisition of Bakermet Inc. The Ottawa-based company specializes in the purchasing, recycling, packaging and reselling of ferrous and non-ferrous scrap metal. ArcelorMittal announced that the senior management of Bakermet Inc agreed to remain in their respective positions.

METAL THEFT

The Province of Nova Scotia tabled its Metal Recycler Act for second reading and set it to the law Amendment Committee for public comment. CARI was informed at 9:30 on May 27 that the Committee was to meet that afternoon at 2:00 PM. Obviously unable to attend CARI prepared a written submission and Jonathan Ross from John Ross & Sons attended on behalf of CARI. He was able to convince opposition members of the Legislature that the Act, if it was to proceed, needed a lot of work. The Act was defeated in Committee. It is likely to be reintroduced in the fall but CARI has already made tentative arrangements to meet with Nova Scotia Hydro and others who were lobbying the government for such an Act. CARI will attempt to convince them that alternatives exist that may help with their problem and obtain their support to go to the province before the Act is reintroduced.

CARI will be handing out information about DataDot Canada marking systems that help deter metal theft at the convention and will follow up with greater information to members after the convention.

In Manitoba the Winnipeg Police have postponed the meeting with CARI and local members twice and no Privacy Commissioner has yet to reply to CARI.

In B.C. Vancouver Police have agreed to pilot the web based metal theft bulletin. It is hoped to be up and running over the next 2 weeks. The City of Langley has been provided with specifications for the technical requirements for a camera system that would be an alternative to tag and holding and the City has notified CARI and members that a revised draft by-law has been prepared by their legal department and will be sent out shortly.

FAST FACTS

  • China Association of Metal Scarp Utilization Chairman Wang Zhenwu is expecting China’s ferrous scrap shortage to continue for the next 10 years. With an increase of steel production, scrap recycling will rise only in a decade or two after a large number of obsolete autos moves into the scrap chain.
  • LCL Industries Inc. recently opened a new recycling plant in Pennsylvania, which will primarily recycle triple-mix container glass. With its advanced technology, the facility consumes 75% less energy while processing about 30,000 tons of recovered glass annually in which to produce grit abrasives and water filtration media. LCL and Wimborne Dorset, England-based Krysteline Group Ltd are in negotiation to use the British glass-imploding technology in the new recycling plant. agro.recyc@cogeco.net for info.
  • A Hungarian technology acquisition company – Power of the Dream Ventures (PDV), has patented a process designed to easily recycle PVC shielded electrical cables. The process was acquired from chemist Imre Kalmar-Nagy. Once soaked in a non-toxic liquid, the PVC becomes pliable and easy for removal. The liquid can be recycled with little loss to its quantity and ingredient. This process is anticipated to generate significant time and cost savings compared to the current strip and grind approach. According to PDV, this technology can also remove metal wire mesh in radial tires.
  • The London Metal Exchange (LME) plans to launch a steel billet contract covering the North American market and possibly South America. No specific deadline has been set for the release date for the contract. LME has looked into other steel contract since the trading of the Mediterranean and Far East contracts. Martin Abbott, LME CEO foresees hot-rolled coil and slab as possibilities for the future.
  • With the arrival of steel futures, major producers including ArcelorMittal SA are against it. The company’s CEO Lakshmi N. Mittal insisted that steel futures aren’t worthwhile as the sector is well known for its price volatility. In addition, he does not believe financial institutions speculating on prices will benefit the long-term sustainability of the industry. Mittal also stated that the only true way to stabilize the steel industry is through consolidation. Daniel R. DiMicco chairman of Nucor Corp. also feels that speculators and other financiers are the ones that stand to make money from futures, not those actually in the industry. Other major steel producers are still waiting and seeing before taking a position on the steel futures.
  • Under the present EU Waste Framework, scrap metal is classified as waste, and exports are subject to shipping controls and trade barriers. The British Metals Recycling Association (BMRA) is lobbying the European Commission to remove scrap from the waste definition. The European Parliament will vote on proposed changes to the framework, which may lighten the regulatory burden on European scrap metal exporters.
  • Molten Aluminum Producer Canada (MAPCAN), a joint venture between Honda Trading and Asahi Seiren Co. Ltd. announced the opening of its molten aluminum plant in Alliston, Ontario. MAPCAN will supply the aluminum to the new Honda of Canada Manufacturing Engine plant schedule to open in September. The company plans to use 100 per cent of recycled materials including siding, wheels, cars and scrap aluminum for the molten aluminum. In addition, the MAPCAN facility is designed and built to maximize energy efficiency with an estimate of energy savings between 30 – 50 per cent.
