CARI President Sheldon Jarcaig, CARI staff Donna, She Kei, and Len and the CARI Board of Directors wishes every member, its employees and families, all the best for the holiday season and a prosperous New Year.

AN INDUSTRY LOSS

It is with deep regret that CARI informs members of the passing of Chester Waxman in Hamilton in his 83rd year, after a long and courageous battle with Mesothelioma.

Chester joined his father and older brother Morris in the scrap business after the war and grew the company to become one of the industry’s leaders. In addition to business, Waxman was involved with a wide array of causes. He was a member of the board at Adas Israel Synagogue, President of the Council of Jewish Organizations, Chair of the Hamilton Hebrew Academy board, and President of the Shalom Village board. He was also Chairman of Hamilton’s handicapped transit service DARTS and a drive to raise $16 million for local hospitals. He ran auctions for Opera Hamilton, the Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra and Theatre Aquarius. Chester is also credited with helping bring the cancer treatment centre to the Henderson Hospital and was the marquee donor to the Chester Waxman Family Care Unit at Hamilton General. In recognition of these community services Chester has received an honourary doctor of laws from McMaster University, was the Hamilton Citizen of the Year, was the Jewish Man of the Year, and was inducted in to Hamilton's Gallery of Distinction.

Chester is survived by his wife, Bailey, sons Warren, Robert, and Gary, his daughter Brenda, his brother Morris and sister Molly and 15 grandchildren. The family requests donations to be made to the Canadian Mesothelioma Foundation, 128 Kilbarry Road, Toronto, ON M5P 1Z4, (416) 417-5544.

Cari Health Benefits

CARI member, OmniSource Corp. has started operating a new shredder in Fort Wayne, Indiana. The shredder is reducing the metals to pieces about 2 inches or less in length, which allows the company to better separate the metals. With the higher prices on scrap vehicles, the nonferrous scraps have become an increasingly important revenue stream for paying the cost of raw materials and operation.

CHAPTER NEWS

On Saturday, November 22, 74 people attended the Annual Ladies Night in Montréal. After a fine dinner this year’s group took in the show "Lord of the Dance" at Place des Arts. It was another great success and, on behalf of those who attended and all members, CARI wishes to thank the Quebec Chapter officials, especially Kevin Goldberg and Daniel Tetreault, for organizing the event.

FAST FACTS

With the endorsement of 32 electronics recyclers, Basel Action Network and the Electronics TakeBack Coalition will launch an electronic-waste accreditation and certification program in early 2010. The accredited certifying bodies will assure conformity to revise the Standards, while providing the highest level of assurance that will meet the most responsible environmental criteria. These criteria include keeping toxic e-waste away from landfills and incinerators; and prohibiting the exports to developing countries or to prison labour operations.

  • Russian government has suspended import duties on ferrous scrap, which used to be 5%. Additionally, the Russian Duma has cancelled VAT on operations with steel scrap to prevent fraud, which will come into effect on January 1st, 2009.
  • Recent research by scientists at the Berlin University of Technology's Department of Environmental Technology suggests that the precious metals in e-scrap are worth too much to be shredded as part of whole units. The research study concludes that manual removal of circuit boards, before the shredding of other materials maximizes recovery of all materials.
  • The Hamilton Port Authority (HPA) has launched its sea shipping initiative with a dedicated container feeder vessel loaded with scrap metals. Sunrise Metals Inc., a Hamilton, Ontario-based scrap trader, will provide the materials for the first voyage to India and Pakistan. "We have great faith in the Port Authority's ability to make this service a sustainable and economically viable option for us," Amandeep Singh Kaloti, president of Sunrise Metals, said. He also believed this will provide a great opportunity for those in the Golden Horseshoe exporting efficiently to national and international markets.
