INSURANCE TIPS

What to do at a Collision Site

Besides reporting a collision as soon as possible, there are some actions that need to be taken to minimize additional losses and maximize safety.

Actions that should be taken, if possible:

  • Get Help – Call local police or fire departments to obtain help for fire, injuries and large spills.
  • Secure vehicle and area – Use Flashers, emergency triangles, flares (if allowed based on commodities hauled and conditions), lights etc. to make yourself visible if the situation warrants.
  • Assist authorities – Without becoming a hazard, help authorities to secure scene and gather facts.
  • Obtain witness information – Whenever possible get names, addresses, and phone numbers, etc. to be able to contact them at a later time.
  • Get photos – Photos of the other vehicle, property damage, road conditions, signs and any other damage can prove invaluable in a post collision review, root cause analysis and insurance claim. The more pictures, usually the better.
  • Obtain information – Try to get:
    1. Registered owner's name
    2. Names of vehicle occupants; if injured, hospital where they were taken
    3. Names of insurance carriers, phone number, policy information.
    4. Vehicle information (make, year, serial, license plate number and issuing province/state, etc.) if towed away – where it was taken
  • Give information – Exchange pertinent facts about insurance and vehicle information with other parties. Never give statements of guilt or make accusations.
  • Notify supervisor – As soon as possible, call your supervisor with facts and information.

Responding to media

In the event of a major collision or spill, there may be media interest or involvement. Whenever possible, refer the media to the authorities in charge and your company media relations representative.

The best ways to deal with the media are:

  • Keep answers short and understandable
  • Answer only the questions asked by the reporter
  • Do not be defensive
  • Give only the facts, what you know is certain
  • If you do not know the answer, do not be afraid to say, "I do not know"
  • You should not release:
    1. Any statement implying personal or company negligence
    2. Speculation about the cause of the emergency
    3. Cast estimates of damage
