Equipment Breakdown Coverage

What is Equipment Breakdown coverage? The insurance industry used to call it Boiler & Machinery coverage but very few companies have boilers these days. In fact, it covers pressure, electrical and mechanical perils and often stated as ?SUDDEN & ACCIDENTAL BREAKDOWN OF AN ?OBJECT? RESULTING IN PHYSICAL DAMAGE TO THE OBJECT AND THE RESULTING DIRECT DAMAGE AND INDIRECT DAMAGE KNOWN AS BUSINESS INTERRUPTION. It is also generally excluded from a property policy.

Objects include boilers, hot water heaters, pumps and compressors, heating & cooling systems, steam cookers, kettles, electrical panels, transformers, electric motors, fans & blowers, telecommunications equipment, copiers, fax machines, ovens & microwaves, diagnostic equipment, printers and cash registers. Accidents can occur through mechanical breakdown, electrical arching, power surges, burning, cracking, bulging, explosion, implosion and centrifugal force.

CARI members have unfortunately experienced a number of these claims. The most common ones are transformer explosions, balers jamming and mechanical breakdown of shredders. Are you covered?
