INSURANCE TIPS

Fire extinguishers: Part 2

Factors influencing effectiveness

  • Readily visible
  • Uniformly distributed
  • Easily accessible
  • Relatively free from blockage by storage and equipment
  • Near normal paths of travel
  • Near points of ingress
  • Protected from corrosive atmosphere and potential accidental or malicious damage
  • Training of employees in their locations and proper handling

Inspection and maintenance

Once fire extinguishers have been installed, it becomes the owner's responsibility to maintain extinguishers so that they remain fully operational. To fulfill this responsibility, there should be a program to provide periodic inspection and an effective maintenance program. As a minimum, the following should be included:

  • Inspecting extinguishers visually once a month (i.e. condition of hose and coupling, if charged, corrosion, etc.)
  • Providing annual maintenance checks (stored pressure units do not require internal examination)
  • Keeping annul test records for one year
  • Emptying and giving maintenance checks every six years to stored-pressure units. Dry chemical extinguishers require hydrostatic testing every 12 years (this procedure is not required for non-refillable, disposable, dry chemical units)
  • Providing equivalent replacements while extinguishers are being tested or recharged.
