Claims Corner: Claim Reporting 101

Unfortunate events and accidents do happen, some of which will be insured. Here are some basic steps and information that will assist you when reporting a claim:

• As soon as possible, and as required, call 911 to report the event to the police, fire department or other authorities.
• Take reasonable measures to protect further injury to a person or damage to property
• If possible, retain any damaged property or goods for the insurance adjuster or authority to examine later
• If the event involved another party, do not admit liability
• Record all details relating to the event and if the claim involves another party, obtain all necessary information from the third party including contact information
• Call your insurance broker as soon as possible - many brokers, including Cowan, have 24/7 claims assistance to which you will be directed in the case of an after-hours claim
• Co-operate with the insurance company adjuster and advise your broker if you are unhappy with the claims process

We hope you never need to report a claim. If you do, your insurance broker can provide valuable information and direction, so make sure you have their number available.

A company located in the north eastern part of the U.S. wishes to sell its auto shredding facility and/ or scarp yard. The 16 acres shredding facility is equipped with relatively new machineries; near major interstate highways; and it is an hour and twenty minutes to New York/ New Jersey Ports. The facility is neat and clean with impeccable maintenance records. The 8 acres scrap facility located within 3 miles from the auto shredder has steady flow of clientele.
