INSURANCE TIPS
"Follow the Keys to Backing" by Raymond Mercuri
Typically, most fleets will find that 30 to 40 percent of all their accidents involve backing - and all of these are invariably considered "at fault". That's a whopping number when you consider that less than 0.005 percent of all the miles you drive are spent in reverse.
So what do drivers do to avoid the accident in the first place? The tips may seem obvious, but they aren't always followed.
1. Not to back up unless it is absolutely necessary.
2. Don't back up any further than you have to.
3. When backing into a new or unknown area, get out and survey the area.
4. Sound your horn to get people's attention when you are backing.
5. Slow down.
6. Don't rely on just one mirror when backing. Keep your eyes moving and use both mirrors. Better yet, use the help of a spotter.
7. Treat all other vehicles around you as potential threats. Watch their actions - are any of the drivers who don't seem to notice you about to start or shift positions.
Again eye contact with the driver, your vehicle horn or four-way flashers will always help.
