Disaster Recovery: Are You Prepared? Part 1

It’s 4 a.m. and the phone rings. The fire department is calling to tell you that your business is engulfed in flames and they are currently on the scene.

Hopefully this is a scenario you never have to live through. Having said that, we believe it is important to plan for such an event so the impact on your business, your employees and your customers is minimal. Almost half of companies never resume operations following a major disaster, while only slightly more than one quarter of businesses fully recover from a significant loss.

To ensure you are one of those businesses that does recover, we recommend a two-pronged strategy that includes a comprehensive insurance program, and a disaster recovery plan.

1. A comprehensive insurance program

Your first step is the easiest – call your broker and ask to review your insurance program. Have any gaps of deficiencies summarized in a report which you can review and discuss with your broker.

Common gaps or deficiencies

a) Limits of insurance (on buildings, equipment, stock or similar property) are too low.
b) Coverage on buildings is insured for Actual Cash Value (depreciated value) instead of Replacement Cost.
c) Business Interruption coverage has not been purchased, or again, the limit of insurance is too low.

The bottom line is – if you buy the right coverage and have the correct limits of insurance, much of the financial impact of a disaster will be insured. The rest of this article will be continued in November issue of the PROMPT.

MERCURY SWITCHES

Registered members of the Switch Out Program should take note that inactive participants will be removed from the website. In addition, the collection sweep is scheduled throughout October; so, mail in those buckets of switches. Remember, your business will be automatically entered into the automotive mercury switch removal contest for the buckets you submit. To double your chances, collect ABS switches and receive a second entry. Please visit www.switchout.ca for details.
